From School Library Journal:
Grade 3-6-- An uninspired presentation that tries to cover too much in too sketchy a manner. Ryan begins with definitions, and then races through the mechanics without sufficient examples to clarify them. The text does not convey the power of poetry but squashes it flat. Readers are told that,``Metaphors are a mild form of magic.'' Such statements trivialize the wonder, and the awkward writing sometimes creates inaccurate or confusing statements. The design is unattractive and disjointed; the full-color photographs are often dull and unnecessary. While there is good advice on writing poetry, the images offered as provocative are often trite. The book appears to be for middle graders, but some of the concepts are not explained simply enough and the poetry suggested for further reading is inappropriate for that age level. There is nothing here about writing poetry that hasn't been said better elsewhere. Anna Cosman's How to Read and Write Poetry (Watts, 1979; o.p.) was much more exciting, informative, and attractive. For technical information, try Myra Cohn Livingston's Poem-Making (HarperCollins, 1991); for inspiration, turn to X. J. Kennedy's Knock at a Star (Little, 1985). --Annette Curtis Klause, Montgomery County Department of Public Libraries, MD
