Grade 4-8?A brief overview of the White House from the planning of the capital city to the closing of Pennsylvania Avenue in 1995. Quiri provides details of the burning of Washington during the War of 1812, the Truman renovation, and many interesting tidbits such as the first running water and roller skating in the East Room. The author describes all of the tour rooms and some of the upstairs quarters, with information about the families that have lived there scattered throughout. Good-quality full-color photographs and archival reproductions enhance the text. The list for further reading includes some web sites, and there is a useful index. This book has less historical information than Judith St. George's The White House (Putnam, 1990) or Leonard Everett Fisher's The White House (Holiday, 1989), but is a better source for reports than Kate Waters's The Story of the White House (Scholastic, 1991). Quiri's title makes an attractive introduction for families planning to visit the Washington area or for those looking for information on the nation's capital.?Margaret C. Gr. 4^-6. Report writers needing information on the White House will find this competent introduction helpful. The book covers all the expected subjects: the history, building and garden design, and descriptions of the public rooms and private quarters. In a nod to the nineties, a chapter on security at the White House details the recent assaults on the residence. The black-and-white and color photographs are crisp but often too small. Other books listed in the bibliography, such as Fisher's The White House (1989), are more visually appealing, but this works for kids who just want the facts. One nice bonus is a page listing the White House sites on the World Wide Web. Ilene Cooper
