Reviews

Gr 4-6--These titles describe the habitats and behaviors of different species of parrots and seabirds. Full-color photographs appear on almost every other page (the brightly colored parrots are especially shown to advantage in creative action shots). Both texts are clearly written and easy to follow. While specific aspects of breeding, migration, etc., are not discussed, many interesting details are included. For example, readers are told that parrots lift food up to their beaks with their feet, and "since large parrots live up to seventy-five years, they have a lot of time to learn" to imitate human speech. In Seabirds, Rauzon notes that little blue penguins hee-haw like mules and crested auklets smell like tangerines. Additionally, characteristics that distinguish different species are clearly described. A short chapter on environmental issues is part of each book. Useful, attractive introductory titles.
