From Kirkus Reviews:
Simons companion book to Calling All Toddlers (1999) is a vivacious salute to the many moods of toddlerhood. Her compilation of poems reflects a keen understanding of the under-five set. Jaunty verses expound upon the ups and downs of this major developmental period. Minor triumphs in mastering skills that adults take for granted are heralded, as in Slippy-Slidy Beans, which portrays the Herculean challenge of spearing wiggly foods with a utensil: ``If I try to cut a cake / or chop a bean in two, / that food goes sliding off the plate / my only hope is glue. The comical ``Choosing My Own Clothes'' depicts the headiness of fledgling independence, as a tot is allowed the full freedom of self-expression via her attire. The poignant ``I Remember resonates with the pathos a new sibling evokes in a toddlers heart. Winters (Copy Me, Copycub, 1999, etc.) sparkling watercolors are the perfect accompaniment to Simons verses. Newcomers and fans alike will revel in this collection of ebullient poetry, a nostalgic tribute to the tumultuous, whimsical, precious, and all-to-fleeting time called toddlerhood. From Booklist:
Seventeen poems, simple yet playful, celebrate toddlerhood, from early accomplishments such as feeding oneself to the more difficult ones of riding a bicycle and jumping rope. Winter's watercolors, which capture these transitions are gentle and beautiful. A tender, nostalgic poem called "I Remember" is accompanied by a center spread, but most of the watercolors are spot illustrations. These are very effective, especially when Winter puts four small illustrations on the left hand page and then one bigger illustration in the middle of the right hand page. The multiethnic children in these pictures seem to be siblings and friends, and the setting appears to be home or neighborhood, not daycare or preschool. This book shows children who are all loved and happy--children who enjoy their growing independence, as well as their freedom to play and be curious. Kathy Broderick
