Synopsis

The oldest son of a family of five girls and four boys. William Kerr was born on May 25 1896, in the parish of Penninghame, Wigtownshire, Scotland, and received an elementary education at the village schools of New Luce and Bargrennan, in the area of his birth. In his time, he has been a shepherd, a farmer, a soldier in both world wars, a railwayman, policeman, hostel manager, and wayleave officer. There have been many highlights in his long life, but the ones he most readily remembers his wartime marriage ot the lovely Alice Barber; the day in 1938 when King George V! smiled and said, "Well done Kerr" as he pinned on the author's breast the MBE; and the help and comfort Kerr was privileged to give thousands of displaced persons in Italy during WW2 when he was commandant of camps.
