Discusses interviewing techniques in a social work/mental health context, from preparing for and welcoming a client, through focused attending, verbal and nonverbal cues of listening, support and empathy, techniques for exploration and elaboration, assessment and working agreements, creating new perspectives and/or behavior change, and issues pertaining to the clinical relationship itself, such as self-disclosure and boundaries. Most of the topics are linked to an illustrative clip on the videotape. The book also offers role-playing exercises and writing assignments. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.

"I was impressed with the creativity involved in this endeavor and the delightful practicality of the approach. All too frequently, we see textbooks without visual examples, or tapes without explanations. This project eliminates those weaknesses and creates a strong visual learning component for counseling process skills."
"I am very excited about having the skill-building component in a student-purchased videotape. And no, I would not have the students purchase the video alone because it is coordinated with the text so beautifully. Interviewing in Action approaches the clinical process from a humanistic perspective of valuing the strengths inherent in each client. The text is combined with a video demonstrating essential clinical skills, an invaluable tool for teaching clinical skills. The text covers a variety of therapeutic encounters, not just traditional therapy delivered in a private practice or clinic setting. In short, Interviewing in Action gives the beginning clinician a compact package of the essential tools and models needed to begin therapeutic interventions."
