Synopsis
Designed to help students learn how to solve problems in their own lives that deal with personal choices and relationships, Sharf's practical, experiential approach is grounded in psychological and social science research and theory. The text's three part structure (Learning and Working, Relationships, and Personal Choices and Solutions) gives students an easy-to-understand framework for learning and applying the material. Part One incorporates information on learning, career choices, and work adjustment. Part Two includes information on relationships with family, romantic partners and friends, and also includes information on problems within relationships, such as gender issues, sexual relationships, cultural diversity, and mourning and bereavement. Part Three focuses on personal solutions to difficult problems such as substance abuse and dealing with stress, anxiety, and anger.

About the Author
Richard S. Sharf has been a counseling psychologist at the Center for Counseling and Student Development at the University of Delaware for 37 years, providing counseling to university students. He also was the internship coordinator for the Psychology Doctoral Internship program. In addition, he taught graduate courses in counseling in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies. In writing THEORIES OF PSYCHOTHERAPY AND COUNSELING: CONCEPTS AND CASES, he corresponded with over 70 experts on theories of psychotherapy to ensure that the book is accurate and up to date. He is also author of APPLYING CAREER DEVELOPMENT THEORY TO COUNSELING, 6th Edition (©2014, Cengage Learning).

" The breadth and scope of the book are excellent for an introductory adjustment text. Of special value is the early chapter on learning. While other texts are appropriate, few, if any, adjustment texts have a chapter on learning. This is an important addition...This text addresses many of 'Life's Choices' in a way that students can relate to. The writing style is assessable but does not talk down to students. The narratives and the interviews between student and therapist are very effective."
