Jerome E. Kaufmann received his Ed.D. in Mathematics Education from the University of Virginia. Now a retired Professor of Mathematics from Western Illinois University, he has more than 30 years of teaching experience at the high school, two-year, and four-year college levels. He is the author of 45 college mathematics textbooks.
We especially liked the introduction of Intermediate Algebra material with the review material in Chapter 8. The extensive number of practice problems for each concept convinced us to give this text an opportunity to prove itself.
The text is written with a very readable, approachable style which rarely sacrifices precision or technical correctness. I appreciate a book which does not insist upon an overly pedantic style at the expense of directness and clarity. Reading the book should be a good backup to, and positive reinforcement of lectures. I love the phrase 'thinking first before pushing the pencil.
