Joan Z. Spade is Professor and Chair of Sociology at the State University of New York College at Brockport. She received her Ph.D. from State University of New York at Buffalo and her B.A. from State University of New York at Geneseo. In addition to gender, Joan teaches courses on education, family, research methods, and statistics. She has published articles on gender, including rape and orientations toward paid work, as well as education. She also has co-edited two books in education. Joan is active in Sociologists for Women in Society, the Eastern Sociological Society, and the American Sociological Association.
Catherine (Kay) G. Valentine is Professor of Sociology and Director of Women's Studies at Nazareth College in Rochester, New York. She received her Ph.D. from Syracuse University and her B.A. from the State University of New York at Albany. Kay teaches a wide range of courses such as sociology of gender, senior seminar in sociology, introduction to women's studies, sociology of the arts, and human sexuality. Her publications include articles on teaching sociology, women's bodies and emotions, gender and qualitative research, and the sociology of art museums. She is the founding director of Women's Studies at Nazareth College and a long-time member of Sociologists for Women in Society. She has served as President of the New York State Sociological Association. Kay and her spouse, Paul J. Burgett, University of Rochester Dean and Vice President, are devotees of the arts and world travel.
