9780534610937: Gardner’s Art through the Ages: The Western Perspective, Volume I (with InfoTrac)

Synopsis

This new alternative, GARDNER'S WESTERN ART THROUGH THE AGES, offers instructors and students a brief, strictly Western approach to art history and retains all of the hallmark features of the market-leading Eleventh Edition in a concise 23-chapter format (also available in a two-volume split). Unique to books with a Western Art focus, the authors retain the chapter on Islam, providing students with insightful coverage of the Islamic tradition's impact on Western culture and art history. Featuring an outstanding art program with more color photos than any comparable art history survey textbook, the authors focus on the context and function of the role of art.

About the Author

Fred S. Kleiner (Ph.D., Columbia University) is the author or co-author of the 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th, and 15th editions of ART THROUGH THE AGES: A GLOBAL HISTORY, as well as the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd editions of ART THROUGH THE AGES: A CONCISE HISTORY, and more than 100 publications on Greek and Roman art and architecture, including A HISTORY OF ROMAN ART, also published by Cengage. He has taught the art history survey course for more than three decades, first at the University of Virginia and, since 1978, at Boston University, where he is currently professor of art history and archaeology. From 1985 to 1998, he was editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Archaeology. Long acclaimed for his inspiring lectures and dedication to students, Professor Kleiner won Boston University's Metcalf Award for Excellence in Teaching, as well as the College Prize for Undergraduate Advising in the Humanities in 2002, and he is a two-time winner of the Distinguished Teaching Prize in the College of Arts and Sciences Honors Program. In 2007, he was elected fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London, and, in 2009, in recognition of lifetime achievement in publication and teaching, fellow of the Text and Academic Authors Association.

Christin J. Mamiya received her Ph.D. in art history from the University of California--Los Angeles, and is Professor of Art History at the University of Nebraska--Lincoln. A recipient of numerous teaching awards, including the Annis Chaikin Sorensen Award for Distinguished Teaching in the Humanities from the University of Nebraska in 2001, Professor Mamiya specializes in the areas of modern, postmodern, and Oceanic art. She has published a book on Pop art, as well as many articles, catalog essays, and book reviews. She is an active participant in the wider community as both a curator and lecturer.

Richard G. Tansey passed away before the publication of GARDNER'S WESTERN ART THROUGH THE AGES. However, his contributions to the book over that last thirty years are evident on every page and remain an enduring legacy even in this new presentation of the material. Professor Tansey received his Ph.D. from Harvard University and taught at Vassar College, the University of California--Los Angeles, Colorado College, and San Jose State University.

Review

"An excellent textbook for introductory courses in art history. The combination of an easy-to-understand text, abundant illustrations, and use of diagrams and drawings makes this the text of choice."

"Gardner texts provide the best balance in how a work of art is approached. The authors depart from an emphasis on descriptive jargon and address historical, social, and cultural contexts. . . . THE primary resource. . . . Fundamentally well conceived."

"Gardner is well written and provides students with pertinent information--both contextual and formal."

"Accurate and up to date.... The historical sketches are very useful."

"I think highly of Gardner. It has improved with each edition."
