From the Inside Flap

As a general textbook, the content is organized to follow course outlines for basic, introductory courses which examine social welfare programs, policies, and issues. The Introduction to Social Welfare and Social Work also discusses specific populations which have suffered particular hardships within the broader society. These groups include women, African Americans, Native Americans, Latino/Latina Americans, gays and lesbians, persons with mental and physical illnesses, and the unemployed. The social, psychological, political, and economic dimensions of the United States treatment of minority groups are highlighted. The cross-cultural perspective, additionally, should provide a resource for both undergraduate and graduate foundation courses concerned with global problems and development.
