This new entry into the concise single-volume encyclopedia market offers a handy, up-to-date resource for ready reference. The editors previously collaborated on The International Encyclopedia of Science and Technology, and Steve Luck edited The American Desk Encyclopedia. This encyclopedia consists of 6500 entries, 300 black-and-white illustrations, and a 16-page color map section. Entries, more dictionary-length than encyclopedia-length, average under a few column-inches. Longer entries, such as the one for "Asia," fill a page. Related entries are shown in small capital letters; there is no index. While the too-brief (six-page) ready-reference section shows a British emphasis, this encyclopedia aims toward international coverage; measurement is expressed in metric and imperial system terms. Non-British users should be aware of British spellings. Information is generally current, including expected contemporary figures in government and popular culture. However, certain statistics, such as population figures, could be more recentDU.S. state population figures represent early 1990s data when 1998 Census Bureau estimates should have been available.
