Adapted from Boccaccio's Decameron, this tale relates the trials and triumph of Helena, a doctor's daughter. After Helena cures an ailment of the king of France, the king grants her wish to marry Bertram, count of Rousillon. Bertram refuses to return her affection, declaring that he will not regard her as his wife until she bears his child and wears his ring. Endeavoring to accomplish these tasks against Bertram's will, Helena follows him to war, winning his affection while disguised and thus confirming their marriage.
