Synopsis

  • An engaging mystery...a love letter to journalism -Seattle's Child
  • Oppenheimer Gold Seal
Teen journalist Maggie Chen wants to be a great reporter. Fai-yi Li still hides behind the identity he used to evade Chinese Exclusion Era immigration laws. Their goals collide in this poignant young adult mystery that's both contemporary and historical fiction.

Maggie's search for her Asian-American family will appeal to readers who wonder how their own lives have been shaped by their ancestors' choices. The Chinatown of Fai-yi's Seattle will make 20th century history buffs want to know more about an almost-forgotten time in the United States' past.  Challenges at the modern newspaper where Maggie works will speak to those who care about journalism and ponder how it's changing.

From the Author

Jeanette Ingold, the author of six young adult novels, has been writing since she worked as a reporter on a daily newspaper many years ago. Her novel Hitch was a Christopher Award winner. She lives in Missoula, Montana. Visit her online at www.jeanetteingold.com.

About the Author

JEANETTE INGOLD, the author of seven young adult novels, began her career working as a reporter on the daily Missoulian. It was a job that would influence everything she's written since, as she's dug for facts and hunted for the best ways to tell true stories.Jeanette's first assignments were much like Maggie's in PAPER DAUGHTER. She tracked down local events, wrote obituaries, and rewrote press releases. Then she went on to a full-time city beat, feature and column writing, and taking charge of the Western Montana desk before leaving the paper to work on her books for young adults.A lot of PAPER DAUGHTER, a book about journalism, comes from that work. In Maggie, Jeanette portrays a fledgling journalist of today finding her place in a rapidly changing newsroom, while, at the same time, she delves into her Asian-American family's past.PAPER DAUGHTER is both contemporary mystery and historical fiction, and like Jeanette's other historical fiction, it personalizes significant periods in United States twentieth century history, bringing them to life through the experiences of authentically drawn characters. The honors given Jeanette's novels for teens include Christopher and Western Writers of America Spur awards, International Reading Association, YALSA and Society of School Librarians International best book designations, and selection to the National Endowment for the Humanities/American Library Association We the People Bookshelf.Jeanette and her husband live in Montana, at the edge of a mountain forest that is their favorite hiking place. Or, snowshoeing place.  It is Montana.
