Synopsis
Deja is dismayed to learn that her teacher has had an accident and a substitute will be taking her place. Under the new sub's care, nothing is the same in Room Ten. A few of the class troublemakers plot to take advantage of the clueless teacher, and soon other students join in. Should Nikki and Deja go along with the rest of the kids in tormenting him? Should they help him out by tattling on their classmates? Or is there another way to handle the situation?

About the Author
Karen English is a Coretta Scott King Honor Award-winner and the author of It All Comes Down to This, a Kirkus Prize Finalist, as well as the Nikki and Deja and The Carver Chronicles series. Her novels have been praised for their accessible writing, authentic characters, and satisfying storylines. She is a former elementary school teacher and lives in Los Angeles, California.
Laura Freeman has illustrated several books for young readers, including the Nikki and Deja and Carver Chronicles series, and Natalie's Hair Was Wild, which she also wrote. Nikki and Deja feel adrift in their familiar classroom after their beloved teacher breaks her ankle and stays home for a few weeks. The first substitute, a kindly fellow, can’t control the class. Though the second sub keeps everyone in line with drill sergeant–like discipline, he does little actual teaching. English sympathetically captures Deja and Nikki’s uneasiness when their school days go off-kilter, and no solution is in sight. Distinctive black-and-white illustrations reflect the actions and the tone of this clearly written story.
