Synopsis
Thirteen-year-old twins Marty and Grace O'Hara's globe-trotting parents disappeared while on assignment for a nature magazine, and now they're living with their uncle Wolfe, a scientist fascinated by cryptids -- creatures that appear in myths and folktales but haven't been proven to exist, like Sasquatch and the Loch Ness Monster. Uncle Wolfe is planning an expedition to New Zealand, and he doesn't really have room for two kids on his crew, despite the fact that he's rented a huge (and possibly haunted) freighter for the trip. But Marty and Grace will do anything to see the Kraken, the gigantic squid that has terrified sailors for centuries! About the Author
Roland Smith first worked with animals at the Portland Zoo, and he has been involved in animal rescues and conservation work around the world for more than twenty years. He is the author of Jack's Run, Zach's Lie, Cryptid Hunters, and Peak, as well as the coauthor of numerous picture books with his wife, Marie. Roland lives with Marie on a farm south of Portland, Oregon, and he enjoys writing, raveling, and visiting schools.

Grade 5–8—Since the disappearance of Marty's parents, he and his cousin Grace have lived with her father, the renowned cryptozoologist Travis Wolfe. This sequel to Cryptid Hunters (Hyperion, 2005) begins with Wolfe mounting an expedition in search of a mythological giant squid. Marty, his friend Luther, and Grace join the crew aboard the Coelacanth, a refitted freighter. Unknown to Wolfe, however, his archenemy Noah Blackwood is in hot pursuit, determined to steal the gigantic creature and destroy Wolfe and his reputation. Add hatching dinosaur eggs, a manic chimpanzee, cool gadgets, a nifty undersea nuclear submarine, ruthless villains, murder, and sabotage to the mix and you've got a high-octane page-turner that will reel readers in and keep them riveted.
