About the Authors
Patricia Reilly Giff is a two-time Newbery Honor Book author and has written more than sixty books for young readers, including her bestselling Polk Street School series. Her perfect pitch for writing stories that kids love comes from her twenty years as a schoolteacher and reading specialist. She lives in Trumbull, Connecticut, with her husband.
Diane Palmisciano is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design and has illustrated over fifty popular books for children. She lives in North Scituate, Rhode Island, where she takes long walks with her dog through the woods and at the beach.

Prolific Giff here offers a four-chapter easy reader with a strong story arc: from bad news and worry to a happy surprise. Jilli and Jim, two inquisitive and imaginative children, wonder what is happening next door. There’s a woman wearing a pointy hat. Is she a witch? Then Jilli’s dog, Fiercely, burrows under the fence. Concerned about the dog’s safety, they decide to be his rescuers, making a satisfying discovery in the process. Palmisciano’s large, colorful illustrations dominate each page and provide a sense of well-being as well as adventure. They also give clues to the action on each page as readers sound out the one- and two-syllable words. Sentences of 10-15 words provide just enough of a challenge to make young readers feel a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction at the resolution of this adventure.
