Synopsis

Learning to read means learning a variety of related skills, including letter recognition, phonics, and vocabulary. Together, these skills help children learn one thing: how to look at print and understand what it says.

The books in this series teach young readers to look beyond the sounds of the words and get at the meaning of the text. Special "think-aloud" prompts guide children to predict, visualize, infer, connect, and question so that they more deeply understand the story's meaning.

Colourful illustrations and simple storylines about bikes, lemonade stands, pets, and more make these books appealing to young readers.

About the Author

During the '70's in his native Liverpool, Mick played guitar in a number of bands, including The Glass Torpedoes and Nightmares in Wax, with whom he made a couple of records. As the insecurity of a musician's life became more and more apparent, his interest in art grew, and he began studying art and design. This eventually led him to the Liverpool School of Art, from which he received Honours in Illustration in 1989. His lively ink and watercolor work has proven very popular with many publishers, and he has illustrated over 250 books. One of his largest projects recently was the interior illustrations for a 45-book series called Puppy Patrol (Macmillan UK), which to date has sold nearly 2 million copies. Mick and his wife Eugenie live across the river from Liverpool with their cat Nellie.
