The Comprehensive Screening Assessment is an initial diagnostic assessment tool designed to be administered to groups of students at the beginning of the year. It, along with informal assessment information collected during the first few weeks of school, will help you determine students' reading abilities and estimate the amount of support students are likely to need during reading instruction. In addition, student performance on this assessment will help you identify students who may need more in-depth diagnostic assessment (i.e., Houghton Mifflin's Emerging Literacy Survey or Diagnostic Assessment.) The Comprehensive Screening Assessment includes items that test students' comprehension, vocabulary, language arts, phonics/decoding, and writing skills. In addition, there is an optional group spelling test.
