Terry Pratchett is one of the world's most popular authors. His acclaimed novels are bestsellers in the United States and the United Kingdom, and have sold more than 85 million copies worldwide. In January 2009, Queen Elizabeth II appointed Pratchett a Knight Bachelor in recognition of his services to literature. Sir Terry lives in England.
Nigel Planer is probably best-known for 'The Young Ones' and as a founder member of The Comic Strip. He has also appeared on numerous TV shows. On stage he was in the original casts of 'Evita,' 'We Will Rock You,' and 'Chicago' (Adelphi). His writing credits include 'I, An Actor.'
In this intensely funny novel, which is part of the science fiction series Discworld, the Night Watch of the capital city Ankh-Morpork experiences political correctness as it must hire a troll, a dwarf, a werewolf and an adopted dwarf who may be the rightful heir to the kingdom. The panoply of Discworld is there: assassins, clowns, soldiers, fools, beggars, talking dogs, sorcerers and the orangutan librarian. British actor Nigel Planer portrays them all believably and effortlessly. His portrayal of the troll Detritus is especially hilarious when the IQ of that lumpish individual begins rising as, caught in a freezer, his internal temperature falls. Outstanding. D.W.
