When a young boy called Phelan Whelan is taken to the zoo by his mum on a hot summer's day, the last thing he expects is for a small hot penguin to stow away in his rucksack. Phelan soon realizes that Whistler the penguin can't live in his house, and together they plan to find a new home for him. Preferably an island somewhere near the South Pole...

Jamie Rix is the author of Gruesome Tales for Grizzly Kids who won the 'Children's Choice' Smarties Award in 1990 and Johnny Casanova, which was shortlisted for the Lancashire Children's Book Award. He has also written several younger books including a number of picture books; Jamie Rix lives in Tooting, London. As well as writing books his working career has been in the theatre and television. He started work at the Royal Court and has worked on BBC programmes such as Smith and Jones, Teenage Health Freak and How To Be a Little Sod.
In this gem of a tale, Whistler, a runaway penguin from an Irish zoo, longs for a cooler world, and a small boy from Ballyfishangel helps him find it. Tommy Tiernan performs all characters with great skill and enthusiasm. His rendition of the penguin's "whistling whisper of a voice" is especially fine as the emotional Whistler weeps, whines, and rejoices his way through the story. Tiernan also enjoys Rix's puns and wordplay as he stretches out the suspense. (Will Whistler make it to the South Pole?) The story itself is good fun, full of the scrapes and small parental deceptions children thrive on. With his irresistible Irish accent, Tiernan makes it great for adult and child listeners alike.
