Synopsis
Joe's garden has been invaded by fairies and he's totally fed up. Since prim, girly cousin Sara-Jane arrived to stay with Joe and his sisters, the climbing frame's become a fairy bower, there's fairy cakes for tea, and no one wants to do his assault course anymore. Then Joe meets the new neighbor—another girl, to his horror. But Mel shows more interest in boat battles and croquet than wings and gossamer—and she has a splendid idea for putting the fairies to flight for good.

Gr. 2-4. Since cousin Sarah Jane has come to stay, Joe's sisters no longer want to play with him on his rough assault course. All they do is dress up in frilly clothes and play fairies, and he's furious because they don't want him at their fairy feast. Surely they know there is no such thing as a fairy. Then he meets Mel, the new girl next door, who likes climbing trees and playing sea battles, and Mel brings a "real" fairy to Sarah Jane's tea. Great for reading aloud, this small paperback chapter book, first published in Britain, has fun with the sibling stuff and loosens up the girl-boy roles a little. Many kids will recognize that Joe really wants to be invited to the fairy feast, and that at least one of his sisters is tired of fairies and wants to play baseball.
