Grade 5-7 A standard football novel with the usual cast of characters: the star halfback, his perky girlfriend, the foreign exchange student who becomes the team's place kicker. This story is set in an economically depressed Ohio town. Craig Bower, the star halfback, is excited about his team's new and enthusiastic coach, but upset by his parents' arguments. Under their new coach, the team improves, but Craig's life becomes more muddled as his parents decide to divorce. Through the course of a season, Craig learns to deal with his frustrations, his perfectionism, and his anger. The characters remain somewhat wooden throughout, and, near the end, the book's messages are shouted from every page. The simplistic approach never gets in the way of the action however (Hallowell offers a lot of gritty descriptions of the games), and sports fans might find this an enjoyable, if forgettable, novel.
