Grade 7-10-- An average sci/fi-adventure story, with typical themes prevalent in most books for teens today: self-image, jealousy, commitment, and loyalty. Three teen-agers are caught up in a world torn apart by economic collapse and bloody Third World battles in this first book in the series. The U. S. federal system is extinct, and independent governments control various areas of the country. The plot centers around Trio, a specially trained mission team, and their struggle to cope with adolescence, friendship, and families as they fight to survive. Unfortunately, the story lacks reader involvement. Instead of journeying "with" Trio, feeling their hardships and being part of their team, readers merely observe them. The book lacks the excitement and emotional tension of John Christopher's "Tripod" series (Dutton) and the creativity and imagery of Madeleine L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time (Farrar, 1962) and its sequels; it could, however, spark class discussion of what might happen if a major government were to break down and the turmoil and consequences that could ensue. --Evelyn Squillari, Clark County Library District, Las Vegas
