Reviews

This work is not the "ultimate sourcebook" it is purported to be. The confusion begins with the subtitle: "healthy" is measurable, whereas "good looks" is purely subjective. Gates has written magazine articles and coauthored a book; however, her condescending tone, potentially misleading information, and contradictory statements (p. 90 states raisins cause more cavities than ten other snacks while on p. 92 the author recommends raisins for snacks) raises serious credibility questions. Most disturbing are unidentified studies by "experts." Some physicians' names are given, but specialties and statement dates are not; medical journals mentioned have no dates or authors. Subjects covered include hair, skin, teeth, nutrition, body image, and fashion. The information is not new and occasionally questionable: "Don't be practical or sensible or economical" when buying clothes for two- to four-year-olds. Much better sources are Dr. Spock's Baby & Child Care (Pocket Bks., 1992) or the Mayo Clinic Family Health Book ( LJ 12/90). Not recommended.
