Read about these real monsters! Fabulous facts and fun.
Grade 2-4?This easy reader briefly describes distinctive characteristics of 10 animals that are either unusually large or display behaviors that might endanger humans. Army ants, Arctic lion's mane (a jellyfish), giant manta ray, piranha, and Komodo dragon are among the "monsters" included. Muted watercolor paintings appear on almost every page. Although the text is clearly written, its point of view is rather schizophrenic. While the information presented is factual, and readers are sporadically encouraged to view the animals with scientific perspective, Schecter emphasizes the sensational whenever possible. Words chosen to evoke shudders are printed in italics, bold print, or, frequently, in larger-sized, bleeding-ink print. The ferocity of a few animals is exaggerated; attacks on humans are rare. All of the creatures are identified by scientific name, but the genus and species are given in reverse order for the Atlas moth. The section on the bird-eating spider states that it is the spider's venom that liquefies its victim's body; however, digestive juices from the spider's abdomen perform this function. Books such as John Still's Amazing Beetles (1991) and Sandie Sowler's Amazing Animal Disguises (1992, both Knopf), as well as Seymour Simon's Little Giants (Morrow, 1983) cover similar material, and have a more scientific tone.?Karey Wehner, San Francisco Public Library
