The Armenian villages of Musa Dagh (Moses Mountain) were among the very few that resisted the 1915 Ottoman order to leave Turkey during World War I. They decided to defend themselves on the heights of the mountain and face the Ottoman army. Victoria Magzanian was 9 years old. She climbed the mountain with some of her relatives and awaited for the rest of her family to follow. But her family was cut off as the army surrounded the mountain. So, Victoria was smuggled down a secret trail where she rejoined her family. Driven by Ottoman soldiers, the Armenians were marched across the Syrian desert and arrived, near starving, in Hama, Syria. Conditions were leak and most of Victoria's family soon died.
But Victoria survived. She began cooking alongside Armenian and Arab women while in Hama. Her repertoire grew when she returned to Musa Dagh at age 14. She married in 1924 and had three daughters that survived to adulthood. Anna was a natural cook and eagerly learned at her mother's side through the many years they lived together.
The Magzanian sisters have teamed up to produce this wonderful cookbook, preserving the distinct Armenian cooking of Musa Dagh, and with it, many of the stories of the village and mountain where they lived.
