About the Author:

John V. Hadley was born in 1840 in Hendricks County, Indiana. A college student at the outbreak of the Civil War, Hadley enlisted in the 7th Indiana Infantry regiment, rising to the rank of first lieutenant. Later, he was assigned to a general's staff. On May 5, 1864, he was captured during the Battle of the Wilderness (Virginia). In the next six months, he was imprisoned at three different prisons. Hadley and three companions,in November 1864, escaped from a Charleston, South Carolina prison and made their way to freedom at Knoxville, Tennessee. After his discharge, he became a husband, father, attorney, judge, state senator, and author. John V. Hadley died on November 17, 1915 and is buried in Plainfield, Indiana.
