Seven distinguished crime writers look at the past, present and future of crime writing in this book, which springs from a BBC Television series. They examine the great landmarks of crime fiction, and a richly illustrated linking commentary reflects on the origins and development of the most popular of all fiction genres. But the point of view is not just historical; the essayists show how detective stories reveal a great many of the prevalent social attitudes of the last hundred years. And the essays deal not only with crime fiction in printed form but also on television and film.

Condition: see description. first [large] paperback edition, published in conjunction with a series of television programmes with the same title, 160pp, double-page title with a drawings of five ill-assorted recognizable 'detectives', mainly on London in the eighteenth century, reputed to have been one of the most violent and lawless cities in Europe, the Introduction (before the fiction) by Mike Pavett, features the first attempt at policing by Jonathan Wild, self-styled "Thief Taker General of Britain and Ireland" who, rather like the grave-robbers Burke and Hare who kept up their supply of bodies to doctors by creating their own, earned rewards for returning stolen goods by arranging their theft in the first place, decorated by contemporary illustrations from early photographs, paintings, magazine covers, etc., there is an invitation '"To all the Thieves, Whores, Pick-pockets, Family Fellons . and Gentlemen & Ladies" to watch Wild's execution by hanging, there also is a view of London at the time which looks to me like one of Twopeny's magnificent pencil drawings, the introduction to each of the crime writers decorated by a Critchley drawing, with contemporary photographs, and the exploits of their fictional detectives by illustrations from the books and, the later ones, also by stills from films, illustrated card covers with some nice bright splashes of blood, a good dip-in book and still looking almost as new.
