Synopsis

This book's premise revolves around the central idea that anyone can make art. Geared towards the beginner, it teaches the aspiring artist how art is created in the mind and then transferred to paper. Running the gamut of artistic consciousness, Wilks takes the reader from the prehistoric images on the cave walls in Lascaux, France to the elecromagnetic spectrum, while demonstrating the basics of perspective, composition, color, and media. Beautifully illustrated with surrealist works from masters such as Salvador Dali, as well as works by the author, the book is the equivalent to a college-level introduction to art. In conclusion, Wilks offers a series of exercises exploring various media and subject matters that emphasize mechanics and imagination as the backbone of successful artistic expression. Recommended.
