Synopsis

In this thrilling journey through the British visual imagination, Andrew Graham-Dixon argues decisively against the preconception that the British are not a visual people. Starting with a revelatory account of the almost unknown masterpieces of the Catholic Middle Ages, Graham-Dixon celebrates the beauty and brilliance of Britain's artistic heritage--from Thomas Gainsborough to Damien Hirst, William Hogarth to David Hockney, John Constable to Henry Moore. Embracing not only painting and sculpture but also history, politics, architecture, and literature, Graham-Dixon writes with one simple aim: "to help myself and others to understand and love British art a little bit more."

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Although its painters and sculptors have mostly been overshadowed by their contemporaries in mainland Europe, Britain has produced many outstanding artists, who are often overlooked in European studies. This phenomenon is examined in this study of British art from the Reformation to the present. The book is linked to a BBC2 television series. As he considers the works of artists as disparate as Stubbs and Bacon, Hogarth and Hockney, Constable and Henry Moore, the author depicts the cultural life of Britain since the Middle Ages which embraces not only painting and sculpture but also history, politics, architecture and literature. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. Seller Inventory # GOR001643179
