Pastor/professor Deffner here offers a novel twist to the friendship evangelism espoused by Rebecca Pippert ( Out of the Saltshaker , 1979): he describes the ripe opportunities of addressing the educated and the intellectual. "Life," he says, "is a drama of salvation." His approach eschews dogmatic evangelism for one that meets the educated and the skeptic where they are, speaks their language, and talks to them of the God of faith and hope instead of offering all-or-nothing, "turn or burn" polemics. The book has an unusual chapter organization; the second chapter, "Books," should perhaps have appeared later. Deffner has made an interesting beginning to a mission field that deserves further consideration by both lay readers and ordained ministers.
