Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Joseph Banks in Newfoundland & Labrador, 1766 His Diary, Manuscripts and Collections; A. M. Lysaght; with a foreword by the Hon. Joseph Smallwood; Faber and Faber, London, 1971, first publication; signed by the author "Averil M. Lysaght July,1979". Sir Joseph Banks, 1st Baronet, (1743 1820)[1] was an English naturalist, botanist and patron of the natural sciences. Banks made his name on the 1766 natural history expedition to Newfoundland and Labrador. He took part in Captain James Cook's first great voyage (17681771), visiting Brazil, Tahiti, and, after 6 months in New Zealand, Australia, returning to immediate fame. He held the position of President of the Royal Society for over 41 years. He advised King George III on the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, and by sending botanists around the world to collect plants, he made Kew the world's leading botanical gardens. He is credited for bringing 30,000 plant specimens home with him; amongst them he discovered 1,400. As outlined in this book, Banks recorded 340 species of plants, 91 species of birds plus fishes and invertebrates. Averil Margaret Lysaght (1905 1981) was a New Zealand biologist, science historian and artist, best known for her scholarly work on Joseph Banks. To create this work she gathered material from all around the globe, an impressive undertaking as acknowledged in her notes. This book, 512 pages, measuring 278mm X 220MM, is in near fine condition in a very good dust jacket now in a protective mylar wrap. The book contains 12 colour plates and about 100 blank and while illustrations including many maps including 2 fold out sketches and maps. This truly is a foundational work on the natural history of Newfoundland & Labrador. In his foreword, Joey Smallwood states "Doctor Lysaght has written a book that will take its place at once with the dozen greatest works written about Newfoundland or anything connected with Newfoundland". He then goes on to list the other great works. This large and heavy book will require addition postage. Signed by Author(s). Seller Inventory # 18116b
