Ostensibly an account of a writing workshop taught at the Gay Men's Health Crisis in New York City, Unending Dialogue also contains 16 poems by Hadas--a respected poet and critic--with over 50 pages of commentary on the writing process (complete with classical references that will likely frustrate many readers). It is also the story of one woman's highly personal response to the silence surrounding the AIDS epidemic. The 45 poems by eight workshop participants might form the book's core, but these romanticized, cliche-filled pieces are by no means what will draw readers. The writers' descriptions of long illness and the nearness of death often contain an unexpected humor, but their insights are far from unique (and as if unconsciously acknowledging this fact, much of Hadas's journal discusses writings by group members not included in the book). Despite its failings, Unending Dialogue makes for emotionally charged reading. It is essential for all metropolitan libraries.
