British illustrator Mills has used the music and lyrics of all of avant-garde musician Brian Eno's songs as the basis for the 57 mixed-media interpretations reproduced here (all in full color). Mills's surreal creations are rarely literal renditions of the texts, but rather represent personal interpretations, sometimes informed by Eno's commentary. They therefore can stand independently of the songs. Each illustration is accompanied by Eno's lyrics (most published here for the first time), along with notes by both Eno and Mills and extracts from their notebooks, illuminating the thought processes and working methods behind the songs and images. Poynor contributes five essays on Eno's artistic theory and practice. A fascinating, visually beautiful document. Mark H. Sullivan, Univ. of Detroit Lib.

4to. 144 pages. Color illustrations, diagrams in text. Black cloth lettered in silver; printed board slipcase. SCARCE DELUXE LIMITED ISSUE OF THE FIRST EDITION, number 51 of 150 copies, signed by Eno and Mills on the half-title, and with Mills' original lithograph "Warm Jets" (1985) laid-in (as well as the tissue guard). Also laid-in is the publisher's slip indicating that the publishing info on the verso of the title refers to the trade paperback issued simultaneously, with a note that this hardcover features a typographic version of the paperback incorporating a rendition of Blank Frank by Brian Eno. The text comprises lyrics to Eno's songs, each accompanied by artwork by Mills. The book is arranged chronologically, according to the albums from which they come, with each album forming a chapter. Rick Pynor's commentary was compiled largely through interviews with Eno, and cover his biography, influences, methods, and philosophies. The chapters (and the albums from which they precede) are: The Prepared Observer (Here Come the Warm Jets); The Painted Score (Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy)); The Dynamics of the System (Another Green World); The Hidden Intention (Before and After Science); and The Words I Receive. The book was published concurrently with the compilation album More Blank Than Frank/Desert Island Selection. Mills produced record covers and book covers for Brian Eno, the Cocteau Twins,[1] Michael Nyman, David Sylvian, Peter Gabriel, and Nine Inch Nails (and for them produced the immense conceptual design framework for The Downward Spiral). A fine copy, the slipcase lightly age-darkened. Seller Inventory # 404837
