While Busi may remind American readers of Jean Genet and may eventually achieve the stature of that French symbolist writer, this first novel (his second to be translated) depends even less on plot than The Standard Life of a Temporary Pantyhose Salesman ( LJ 10/1/88). Barbino starts life in a small town in northern Italy hating his mother, who hates him for not being a girl, and inevitably becomes a homosexual. In 1968 he flees to Paris, where priapism is for him a state of grace and where he meets clinging Mademoiselle Arlette, who seeks to convert him but whose caresses are received like the profanations of a nightmare. In his struggle to survive, Barbino has a variety of desultory thoughts, most of which are cynical and some quite hilarious. The translator is British. Recommended for Genet buffs and readers of gay fiction.
