A lovely first edition, first printing of British Poet Laureate Ted Hughes' children's book of his creation stories featuring God fashioning his creatures with triumphs but some mistakes. In fine blue cloth in a fine complete dust jacket in plastic cover. A nice copy. A fantastic title for fans of Kipling's "Just So Stories" and Aesop's "Fables." These eleven stories explore how Owl, Polar Bear, Whale, Fox, Donkey, Hare, Elephant, Tortoise, Hyena, Bee, Camel, and Cat came to be. A Parrish Books favorite is the story of Bee, who was created with "tears of the demon" and is charged to flit from flower to flower, gathering sweet nectar to challenge the "bitterness" that runs through Bee's veins.
