Synopsis

Although Paul Auster and JM Coetzee had been reading each others books for years, they did not meet until 2008. Their encounter sparked the correspondence that is presented in this book. Over three years, their letters touch on almost every subject: sport, fatherhood, literature, film, art, politics, philosophy, the financial crisis, eroticism, love and marriage. The result is an intimate and often amusing portrait of the growing friendship between two brilliant minds as they explore the complexities of life.

Review

Extraordinary book. Times Literary Supplement Uniquely insightful, unfailingly interesting, men of letters. -- Arifa Akbar Independent You feel that Auster and Coetzee are addressing each other directly and honestly. Some of it is rather moving, and underpinning it all is genuine affection. Daily Telegraph Elegant letters ... These pages are at their most compelling when the respective writers begin to dwell on the currency of their fiction. -- Tim Adams Observer

Binding strong and tight. 248pp., contents clean and bright. "After a meeting at an Australian literary festival brought them together in 2008, novelists Paul Auster and J. M. Coetzee began exchanging letters on a regular basis with the hope they might "strike sparks off each other." Here and Now is the result: a three-year epistolary dialogue that touches on nearly every subject, from sports to fatherhood, literature to film, philosophy to politics, from the financial crisis to art, death, eroticism, marriage, friendship, and love. Their high-spirited and luminous correspondence offers an intimate and often amusing portrait of these two men as they explore the complexities of the here and now and reveal their pleasure in each other's friendship on every page."
