Synopsis

"Beautifully crafted, and so finely balanced that she holds the reader right up against the tender humanity of her characters." - Eimear McBride, author of A Girl is a Half-Formed Thing

From Belfast to London and back again the eleven stories that comprise Caldwell's first collection explore the many facets of growing up - the pain and the heartache, the tenderness and the joy, the fleeting and the formative - or "the drunkenness of things being various". Stories of longing and belonging, they culminate with the heart-wrenching and unforgettable title story.

About the Author

Lucy Caldwell was born in Belfast in 1981. She is the author of three novels and several stage plays and radio dramas. Awards include the Rooney Prize for Irish Literature, the Dylan Thomas Prize, the George Devine Award for Most Promising Playwright, the BBC Stewart Parker Award, a Fiction Uncovered Award and a Major Individual Artist Award from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland. Her most recent novel, All the Beggars Riding, was chosen for Belfast's One City One Book campaign in 2013 and shortlisted for the Kerry Group Irish Novel of the Year.

Review

"Lucy Caldwell’s first short-story collection is largely rooted in her native Belfast and points up aspects of the city – not the Troubles ... but a rawness and an intolerance of difference ... Taken together, the stories are a survey of the threats faced by women from childhood through to childbirth."–Guardian
