Gr 9-12 Each of these five short stories by British author Harley is tightly crafted and mood-sustaining throughout. They differ greatly in length and in subject matter, but all have an undercurrent of the vaguely sinister and ironic, reminiscent of the best of Ian Southall. All of the stories deal with teenagers coping with problems or situations not of their making. In a sense, they are victims, like Julie who has to deal with an emotionally unstable mother or Paul, whose life is shattered by the malicious meddling of an old man, but most are also survivors, and the stories deal with unique solutions to problems. Each story involves an unexpected twist and the protagonists' reaction to it, and all are satisfying and complete. The characters are consistent and believable in their situations, if not always likable. This collection should appeal to Robert Cormier fans. Trish Ebbatson, Delaware County District Library, Ohio
