Paperback: 9¼" x 6". Condition: Near Fine: Small signs of wear. Cover Art: Arcangel Images & Getty Images (illustrator). Uncorrected Manuscript Proof. © 2007: A stand-alone novel by Paul J McAuley. Uncorrected Manuscript Proof:- Synopsis: For fifteen years, the version of America that calls itself the Real has used its Turing gate - alternate reality - technology to infiltrate alternate Americas, rebuilding those wrecked by nuclear war, fomenting revolutions and waging war to free others from Communist or Fascist rule, establishing a Pan-American Alliance. Then a nation exhausted by endless strife elects Jimmy Carter on a reconstruction and reconciliation ticket, the covert operations are wound down, and the Real begins to wage peace. But some people believe that it is the Real's manifest destiny to impose its idea of truth, justice and the American way in every known alternate history, and they're prepared to do anything to reverse Carter's peacenik doctrine. Adam Stone, one of the Cowboy Angels, the field agents who worked covertly in other histories, volunteers for reactivation after an old friend begins a killing spree across alternate histories. His mission uncovers a startling secret about the operation of the Turing gates, and leads him into the heart of an audacious conspiracy to change the history of every America in the multiverse - including our own. 'Cowboy Angels' is a vivid, helter-skelter thriller in which one version of America discovers the true cost of empire-building, and one man discovers that an individual really can make a difference:- Review(s): "Fantastic concept: 'Stargate' meets '24'" / "A stunning SF thriller" / "Genre and mainstream publicity coverage" / "One of our most versatile and talented writers" - Publishers Weekly / "Paul McAuley is one of Britain's hottest SF thriller writers" / "Winner of the Arthur C Clarke, Philip K Dick, British Fantasy, Sidewise and John W Campbell Awards" / "His prose is muscular, his dialogue crackling, his characters needy and vivid" - The Washington Post:- (original cost unmarked). For fifteen years, the version of America that calls itself the Real has used Turing gates to infiltrate a wide variety of alternate Americas, rebuilding those wrecked by nuclear war, and fomenting revolutions to free others from Communist or Fascist rule, establishing a Pan-American Alliance. Then a nation exhausted by endless strife elects Jimmy Carter on a reconstruction and reconciliation ticket, and the Real begins to wage peace instead of war.
