Reading With Pictures is a nonprofit organization that advocates the use of comics in the classroom to promote literacy and improve educational outcomes for all students. We work with academics to cultivate groundbreaking research into the proper role of comics in education. We collaborate with cartoonists to produce exceptional graphic novel content for scholastic use. Most importantly, we partner with educators to develop a system of best practices for integrating comics into their curriculum.

Reading With Pictures was founded in September 2009 by Josh Elder to promote literacy and the visual arts through the use of comics in the classroom. Josh was soon joined by scores of like-minded individuals who shared his passion for comics in the classroom. Each brought his or her own unique ideas and resources to the organization, and together they made the dream of Reading With Pictures a reality. This anthology - the product of thousands of hours of labor donated by our more than 60 volunteer creators, editors and marketing staff - is the tangible proof.

Here at Reading With Pictures, we believe that comics have the potential to be incredibly engaging, efficient and effective tools for the classroom. We believe it because we've experienced it in our own lives. Comics made us better students, better citizens and better people. Now we hope to share those experiences with pupils in every city, every school and every classroom.

As RWP intend, their first book makes for an excellent classroom accessory. The variety of stories means that any kid can find something to read, and it can give teachers an insight into what kinds of comics and graphic novels their students would be most interested in learning from (or making themselves!) It is also something that would make a great gift for a kid just getting into comics or learning to read. Parents and educators can also benefit from reading the book; not just because the stories are in fact really good, but also to get a sense of what comics and creators there are that kids can enjoy and learn from. Of course, you can also buy it and just enjoy it for the cracking good stories yourself; a little selfish comic book reading never hurt anyone.
