Many different predictions about our future: Some experts predict an incredible future propelled by digital technology, others predict destruction due to climate change, others predict automation will cause massive unemployment, others speak of advantages or dangers of artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, genetic engineering. But there can be only one future.

To take a new look at our future, the findings to date on climate change, automation, economics, history of technology, and future digital and other technological changes have been thoroughly reviewed, and a synthesis offered that includes all these forces in a single future.

The result is a prediction of a future in which the precise details of our technological progress cannot be determined in advance, but a future which is predicted to unfold with ever more increasing rates of change, and a future that is incredible in its overall possibilities.

The future, though fraught with danger, can be surprisingly bright - if we can avoid those actions which would impede our progress while making good use of the opportunities embedded in the challenges to come

From the Author:

Q and A with David Mills
Q:  Why did you write "Our Uncertain Future?  Over the last ten years, I had become increasingly concerned that there were all these very different views about the future expressed by different experts, most ignoring the others.  I felt that a general scientist who was not an expert in any of the fields should review all the findings and bring them together, to form the one most likely future.

Q:  What makes you qualified to be that scientist?  Over a long career, I have conducted scientific research in several major different fields and published a hundred professional articles reporting this research, in areas as diverse as astrophysics, plasma physics, psychology, biology, neuroscience and biomedical research. My academic training includes advanced degrees in electrical engineering, physics and psychology, plus postdoctoral training in neuroscience. I read widely, and also ran an environmental web site for a number of years.

Q:  What did you do to prepare for the book?
I studied all the fields thoroughly: climate change, automation, economics, history of technology, future of digital and other technologies.  This research included an analysis of more than fifty texts by experts in all the different fields, and many more scientific articles. Then I brought all the material together, several times. I tried to look at the findings without prejudice, and frankly, I was a bit surprised by some of the conclusions.  Overall, I think the synthesis resulted in a balanced, yet positive view of our future.

From the Back Cover:

Many different visions of our future have been presented recently. Environmentalists have predicted dire consequences unless we seriously curtail our lifestyles; some computer scientists have predicted a flowering of mankind, assisted by increasingly intelligent computers; some experts predict overpopulation and resource depletion; some biologists, geneticists and nanotechnologists predict the extension of human life and the end of all disease; others warn of catastrophe from the same technologies; finally, some worry that automation and intelligent robots will make us obsolete or even eliminate us.  Each author has largely ignored the others, as if there could be many different futures.

Only one future can emerge.  How can we predict what will happen when all of the forces for change collide? When digital and other technologies collide with global warming, when automation takes all our jobs?  What will our lives be like, how will we support ourselves, what will we do with our free time?  What problems and opportunities will arise for ourselves and our children as our uncertain future unfolds?

This book takes a new look at these important questions.  The findings to date on climate change, automation, economics, and possible digital and other technological changes have been thoroughly reviewed, and a synthesis attempted to include them in a single future.  The resulting future is notably uncertain in its details, but predictable in its process, and incredible in its overall possibilities.  The future, though fraught with danger, can be surprisingly bright - if we can make use of the opportunities implicit in the challenges to come..

Book Description Pacific Beach Publishing, United States, 2013. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. What will happen in our future? Some predict that we face elimination by superintelligent machines, others predict destruction due to climate change, yet others predict massive unemployment and economic collapse due to automation. We have been told of advantages and dangers of nanotechnology, genetic engineering, and other technologies. Each author has largely ignored the other points of view. But, there can be only one future. This is a refreshing new look at our future from a former university professor who holds advanced degrees in electrical engineering, physics and psychology. The findings to date on climate change, automation, economics, history of technology, and future digital and other technological changes have been thoroughly reviewed, and a synthesis offered that includes all these forces in a single future. The result predicts an incredible future in which the precise details of our technological progress cannot be determined in advance, but a future which is predicted to unfold with ever more increasing rates of change. The best way to prepare for this future, a future already well underway, will be to take advantage of the unique opportunities offered by the changes driving our future, the opportunities offered by the very technologies driving us toward our incredible future. The future, fraught with danger, can be surprisingly bright -- if we can make use of the opportunities implicit in the challenges to come. Seller Inventory # APC9780578130361
