Rowdy Randy is a charming exploration of the life and creatures of a rugged western cattle ranch. With colorful and exciting illustrations, this story explores the many creatures that roam the plains, the creatures that make handy targets for those annoying little horseflies. But, from a horsefly's perspective, this story takes an interesting twist, creating a cowgirl adventure from one lonely horsefly-turned-cowgirl. The young reader will love this adventure as they learn about life on the plains, following a large cattle roundup, and the horsefly-turned-cowgirl that lays claim to the multiple targets on the roundup. Rowdy Randy, the feisty heroine in Casey Rislov's picture book, is a cowgirl fly who has earned her name by being bravely annoying others. The goal is to prove that she is the toughest cowgirl in flight, fancying herself as "the greatest outlaw." Her brazen cowgirl attitude defies cattle, fish, and any tough days, but what she really needs is to lead a team of outlaws, despite her pride in being a loner and her inability to rustle up some comrades. Rowdy Randy, a horsefly who calls herself the toughest cowgirl around, is undeterred by her small size and taunts bigger animals. She tries to stealthily bite a dog and encounters a fish, among other animals, and leaves chaos in her wake; at one point, she causes a stampede of cows, which is halted by human wranglers. She escapes the stampede unscathed and rests at the wranglers camp, strumming a guitar under the stars. The book ends abruptly with Randy about to be crushed by a gloved human hand: Is this how it ends? she asks. Rislov's (Imagination Bigger Together, 2017) phrasing emphasizes the Western setting, often employing alliteration (best buckaroo ; dangerous desperado). The author clearly portrays Randy s attitude and cowgirl abilities... Pullen's (Hockey Hero, 2015) textured and colorful illustrations offer realistic animal portraits and rich landscape scenes, often spanning two pages. The illustrations also offer further context; for example, the end of the text suggests that Randy's demise is imminent, but the following page shows Randy sitting atop an apparent jackalope. --Kirkus Reviews
