This book contains two stories of Yokuts children in the days before Europeans came to the Sierra of California. The first story, Blue Jay Girl, tells of a child who lived in a village in the eastern foothills of the Sierra Mountains of what is now California. Her people were the Chukchansi Yokuts. When her boldness gets her in trouble, Blue Jay Girl finds that she needs to make some changes in her life. Some distance away, but still in the Sierra, the second story, Lion Singer takes place. It is the story of a strong and courageous child who was a Yaudanchi Yokuts boy. His name is Dog Cry until he faces danger and earns a new name, Lion Singer. Both stories stress the theme that even children need to be responsible for the welfare of others.
