This book provides a programme for parents to develop early learning skills in their young children in a situation where the framework of early formal education is not established. It is divided into three sections: motor skills and movement, speech and language, and social skills. Although shown separately, these areas of development all inter-relate and some of the activites in each section show how several skills can be used together. Each activity will show, firstly, the skill to be taught, and secondly, why it is necessary to learn the skill. Thirdly it shows how to teach the skill, and fourthly, how to improve and practise the skill through activites and games. Lastly it shows the related benefits of the skill ie transfer effects which will improve other skills. Photographs, illustrations and children's pictures are used to demonstrate the variety of activities which aim to capture the imagination and enthusiasm of the child. Parents are encouraged to participate in the activities to help build up the child's conference in his or her abilities which will in turn give them a good basis for starting school. The text is designed for parents of per-school children and those with children in the early years of school who need a little help to improve their learning. Teachers and parents involved in play groups and nursery schools and childminders and nannies should also find it useful.
