This is part of a wide-ranging series which provides critical studies of key political figures in world history since 1500. The books are not biographies, though inevitably most will contain much biographical matter. Rather they are succinct interpretative essays, analysing the major features of the career within the context of its own time. Benito Juarez (1806-72), the Indian-born (Zapotec) founding father of modern Mexico championed a newly-independent, largely non-white nation at a time of aggressive European supremacy. He steered his country through civil war and invasion by the French, defeating - and executing - Napoleon III's puppet, the Emperor Maximilian, in one of the most sensational episodes of 19th century history. Juarez was a controversial figure then and today, his real achievements obscured by the mythology and symbolism of his career. The book sets Juarez in his full historical context, analyses his reforms and beliefs - his struggles to break the power of the Church and the army and to being liberalism and constitutionalism to Mexico. The book also has a wider relevance than Mexico alone - it is a case study of the travails of 19th-century nationalism and nation-making.
