Reviews

Concise political information, recent statistical data, and analytical essays are provided in this convenient guide to the reunification of Germany. Heading a team of British scholars, Osmond is chiefly responsible for two of the book's three sections. In the first, he presents a chronology and a brief historical-political assessment of the events of 1989-92, but his main contribution is as the compiler of Part 3, the reference section. This consists of an alphabetical directory of names and topics associated with reunification and German politics (with generally brief entries, though some extend to two pages), election results, governmental listings, economic indicators, and the text of important speeches and treaties. There is also a lengthy bibliography of recent sources, which is organized by broad topics. Part 2 is a collection of six scholarly essays, written by the other contributors, on political, economic, and social issues (such as electoral volatility, the condition of women, and trade unions). This book will benefit libraries both as an up-to-date reference tool, and introductory text to the new united Germany. Recommmended for all academic and large public libraries.
