From the Back Cover

Introduction to Building, originally written by Derek Osbourn, forms the foundation of the Mitchell's Building Series, the standard reference work for all those concerned with contemporary methods of building construction. This second edition has been revised and updated by Roger Greeno and retains its authoritative overview of the many and varied processes involved in the creation of a building.

The new edition provides a greater perspective of construction procedures and incorporates detailed interpretation of construction practice to current legislative standards. It analyses a building in terms of what it is expected to do, the processes required, the building team which implements the processes, the methods used for communicating information and typical construction methods. Each section is designed both to stimulate interest and to encourage further reading from the more advanced volumes in the Mitchell's Building Series.

Topics covered: the requirements of a building; appearance; durability; dimensional suitability; strength and stability; weather exclusion; sound control; thermal comfort; fire protection; lighting and ventilating; sanitation; security; cost; building processes; the building team; communication; construction method.

As a course reader for students of architecture, building, construction management, quantity surveying and other related disciplines, this book provides a comprehensive introduction to every aspect of building.

The first edition of this book was published in 1985, before the tragic and untimely death of its original author Derek Osbourn. It is a compliment to Derek that his book has become an established part of the Mitchell's Building Series, and that the Higher Education team at Addison Wesley Longman acknowledge the benefits and values that its readers will find in the continuity of his work.

While this update retains much of the first edition's originality, the passage of time has inevitably led to many technological, procedural and legislative changes; these are apparent in the numerous amendments to the Building Regulations during the 1990s. This new edition reflects these changes, and in particular incorporates the revisions to the Approved Documents concerning ventilation and conservation of energy.

This book is prior and complimentary reading to the many other texts in the Mitchell's Building Series. The illustrated presentation provides the reader with a blend of the design considerations and practical aspects of construction, benefiting all those involved in the processes of design and construction of buildings. In addition, students of architecture, building, construction management, quantity surveying and other related subjects will find it an essential course reader. Roger Greeno
