Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good+. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. 374 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). "In this book, the first sustained and integrated study of popular disturbances over the long period that links the age of oligarchy with the late Victorian, Dr Stevenson uses his own research and the work of other historians to examine the causes and character of such disturbances, and their relationship with social and economic change. The breadth of treatment, from eighteenth century election riots through the movements of which the Luddites and the Chartists are only the most familiar to the crises of the later nineteenth century, allows Dr Stevenson to uncover and explore long-term patterns in popular discontent, and to set individual outbreaks in a wider context. He devotes particular attention to price and wage riots, to the London 'mob', to the development of new forms of popular protest, and to the overall distribution and significance of these movements. In his introduction, he discusses some of the methodological problems presented by the subject, and gives a critical appraisal of various approaches to it. He concludes with an examination of the role of popular disturbances in English society and their political significance, both in terms of the 'politics of protest' and the threat of revolution in industrialising Britain."
